Edward Gilbert Posted 24 February , 2014 Share Posted 24 February , 2014 Can anyone tell me for what deed and when Capt. William Harold Hillyer(1882-1916) was awarded the MC. Im told but it is not confirmed that it had to do with the mining of Hill 60 near Ypres in 1915. He was killed in action May 22,1916 and buried in the Bethune Town Cemetery. He was from London and was made temporary Captain in the Royal Engineers Sept. 7,1915 but I understand that the explosion of the mines at Hill 60 took place April 17,1915 and the battle ended May 7,1915 so presumable William was a Lieut at the time of the battle. He was the son of William John Hillyer and Sarah Ann Hillyer of 15 Shortlands Rd, Shortlands Bromley Kent (from the war grave site).
