DrB Posted 6 October , 2004 Share Posted 6 October , 2004 I need some help from the medal experts. What is the reason behind the placement of a palm frond on the suspension ribbon of a WWI French Croix de Guerre? Thank you. DrB
DirtyDick Posted 6 October , 2004 Share Posted 6 October , 2004 Hi DrB It is to differentiate between the levels of commendation. Bronze Palme (laurel branch): Army Despatch Silver Gilt Star: Army Corps Despatch Silver Star: Divisional Despatch Bronze Star: Brigade, Regimental of Unit Despatch. More than one type of emblem could be worn on the ribbon. I believe air ace Guynemer had 27 Palmes, and these were all affixed to the ribbon of his Croix de Guerre, which looked to be about 12" long.
