Remembered Today:

330 million poppy seeds for 20 mile 'Poppy Avenue'. Northlew,

(difficult to know which Topic area this should go in!)

A certain well-known UK seed company has donated 330 million poppy seeds (try counting those!) to help Northlew create a 20 mile Poppy Avenue.

In WW1 the male population of the village was 100. They lost 24 during the War.

Northlew are also building a memorial Store with all the profits being ploughed back in to the community.

We are encouraged to buy a packet of Field Poppy seeds to support Northlew.

Google 'Northlew Poppy Avenue' to find out more.

Why do the organisers think that this is a good way of commemorating the Great War? Sounds far too commercialised to me.

No idea! I was just reporting on the scheme.

I don't see any commercialisation in this plan.

The seeds are being donated, in the same way that money or land was donated by businesses or local benefactors for the construction of memorials in the years after the war.

And thinking about the Community Memorial Store, many villages preferred to build something of direct benefit to the local community, such as a Memorial Hall, a Memorial Recreation Ground or a Cottage Hospital rather than build a monument.
