mark holden Posted 15 February , 2014 Share Posted 15 February , 2014 The items pictured came from an Officer who was in a Trench Mortar Battery then transferred to the RAF. I think the cruciform metal item is the carrier for an 18 pdr shell and the two brass 'T' shaped items I think are for firing an artillery piece? The two yellow tin labels I think are from aerial bombs. Finally there are two brass spirit levels that look like they should fit into something. Any help most gratefully received. Thanks Mark
Sepoy Posted 15 February , 2014 Share Posted 15 February , 2014 The little hammer things are artillery friction tubes, used to set off bagged charges in bigger Artillery Pieces via a lanyard. The cross thing was fitted to the base of a 18 pounder brass cartridge case to protect the primer, whilst in transit. I cannot help with the other items Sepoy

mark.topham Posted 15 February , 2014 Share Posted 15 February , 2014 The two spirit levels next to the base ring look like they could have come from a sight unit. Elevation and traverse. Bom T
battiscombe Posted 15 February , 2014 Share Posted 15 February , 2014 the spirit levels look like ones to fit in a field clinometer, and look like they would fit my one -- whose spirit level is broken [in case you don't need two!] -- although I suspect they may fit various related bits of sighting kit .. some pics of ones here http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4018/4601117268_56b94e0a0e.jpg http://farm2.staticflickr.com/1108/4600494659_c4e1279060_o.jpg

nigelfe Posted 17 February , 2014 Share Posted 17 February , 2014 IIRC by 1914 levelling bubbles had been standardised for all gun and howitzer sights, and instruments.
RodB Posted 28 February , 2014 Share Posted 28 February , 2014 I think the T pieces are T friction tubes, as Sepoy says. Here's a diagram of Mk IV, which looks like yours, used for small and medium BL artillery.
