Remembered Today:

Australian cemeteries

Hi all,

As part of the ongoing expansion of my site, I am in the process of adding an online guide to Australian WWI war cemeteries.

The database is in its infancy at the moment, but will grow over time. So far I have listed all Australian cemeteries in Belgium and Gallipoli, with expanded information on seven of the Belgian cemeteries. Feel free to check it out at www.diggertours.com (click on Visiting the Battlefields).

Cheers,

Mat

If it helps, I can supply you with a spreadsheet showing all Australian war graves (numbers, location, unknowns etc) worldwide. The latest numbers from CWGC.

Terry,

That would be great. At the moment I am relying on an old spreadsheet the Australian War Memorial supplied, so some up-to-date information would be appreciated.

My email address is mat@*diggertours.com (remove '*' to send me an email)

Cheers,

Mat

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi all,

An update on my earlier post. The list of cemeteries in Belgium and Gallipoli is now complete and live. France (the biggest job!) will go live this weekend.

There is expanded information on:

Adinkerke Military Cemetery, Furnes

Buttes New British Cemetery, Polygon Wood

Dochy Farm New British Cemetery

Hooge Crater Cemetery, Zillebeke

Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Poperinghe

Mud Corner Cemetery, Warneton

Perth Cemetery (China Wall), Zillebeke

Ramparts Cemetery (Lille Gate), Ieper

Toronto Avenue Cemetery, Warneton

Tyne Cot Cemetery, Passchendaele

Go to www.diggertours.com/auscemeteries.htm

I'm adding a new cemetery every day or so, so check back often for the updates.

Cheers,

Mat

Thanks for those links. Among the photos you have taken at Toronto Avenue Cemetry do you have one for No.1865a Pte John Stannen Luff, Grave Ref A.35 of the 33rd Battalion AIF?

Luff from Fremantle in Western Australia, was originally in the 2nd Reinforcements to the 44th Battalion but when in England about 60 men of this reinforcement group were transferred to the 33rd & 34th Battalions.

I have his WW1 letters at home and am working on his story.

Regards

Andrew
