His family have told me that he was blinded and then returned to the Regt with the 2nd number a a sniper! Chris_Baker Posted 7 February , 2014 Share Posted 7 February , 2014 Essentially it was to simply and reduce administration. Up to then, each TF unit had its own numbering sequence and if a man was moved from one unit to another he had to be renumbered. In the new numbering scheme a man would keep his new 6-digit number even if posted to a different unit, unless it meant a transfer to a different corps (such as an infantry man being transferred to the artillery).
