I can't find the original thread in which this was mentioned, but I have compiled a list of those available as of last week by searching the NA site for "War Diary".

Dear All,

I'm almost too embarassed to ask the following question as I understand that it is elementary. I've been interested in military history for many years . Father in the forces, brother in the forces. Collected medals and cap badges for many years and researched on a very basic level. I understand 1st battalion, 2nd battalion etc. What does 1/4 or 1/9 Battalion, for example, mean?

If you don't ask I guess you never learn.

Ian,

During the war, as the Territorial Battalions were sent overseas, they raised 2nd battalions to remain at home to provide reinforcements for the overseas battalions. To distinguish between the two, the first line battalion became, for example, the 1/4th, while the second line battalion became the 2/4th. Eventually the 2nd line battalions were also posted overseas, and third line battlions were raised (ie 3/4th). I hope this makes sense!

I noticed in another recent post a mention that the diaries of the East Surrey and the Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiments are available on line free at http://www.queensroyalsurreys.org.uk/war_d...aries_home.html. The ones I've looked at are typed transcipts of the originals and include some additional material such as secret orders of the day, that you don't get from the NA. I know this because a day or so before I saw the post with this web link I had paid £17 for 20 pages from the East Surrey war diary for 1917.
