I am not a medal collector but I found this little snippet in the Birmingham Weekly Post 13 Jan 1917 and I thought it might be of interest

"Lt Col L E S Ward (Lancelot Edward Seth) DSO commanding officer of 172 Brigade RFA is a son of the Rev Percival Ward of Worcester.

This is the sixth time in his military career that Col Ward has had this honour bestowed upon him."

Is this a record?

Regards

Terry

According to his Time obituary he was DSO and 1 bar with several MIDs to his name, so perhaps 6 commendations one way or another but not 6 DSOs

See page 1715 of War Services of Officers of the Army 1920 for confirmation of 6 mentions in despatches for Great War - CMG, DSO and bar.

There was a thread on the topic of awards of the DSO back in 2012 and the consensus of opinion was that the maximum number of DSOs awarded to a single person was four, ie the DSO and three Bars, and 16 people share this distinction (not all from the Great War period).
