Remembered Today:

US Navy on a War Memorial

The War Memorial at New Marston, Oxford, has a name on it who was in the US Navy in WW1. Anyone any idea how I can find out more? Obviously he is not on CWGC (but I did check, just in case).

Any assistance greatly appreciated!

You could check the county records office to see if they hold any documents relating to the names on the memorial. Also, the library service or the local paper might have a relevant archive.

I would guess that this person emigrated to the USA and ended up in the USN as a result. Or he could have been an American living there when the USA entered the war and he joined up. But in either case he must have retained some connection with the town, or they would not have known what happened to him.

Adrian,

It's a long shot based on the theory that the individual may have been buried or lost at sea or that his body was not returned to the U.S. postwar, but you could try running the name through the American Battle Monuments Commission database at http://www.abmc.gov/abmc44.htm

Best wishes,

Michael
