The inscription reads " God protect the Alpini".It was probably more of a religious good luck medal than military. The Alpini were the highly regarded Italian Alpine troops, they wore a feather in their caps. From memory they had the Austrians on the ropes in the north of Italy until the Germans sent troops to help out. Rommel fought in Italy but wether against the "Alpini" I'm not sure. I've a few Italian medals but have never seen this one, quite interesting!

Thank you Ron for your assessment. This medal is from my Great-uncle who fought in the Alpes with "Alpenkorps" against the Italians. Must be a souvenir from those days.

This medal has made me curious about the First World war in the Alps. The Western Front seems to dominate this subject. That is a fascinating medal and as you say, it must be a souvenir. Did your great uncle survive the war?
