11thargyll Posted 2 October , 2004 Posted 2 October , 2004 Hi, I am researching my great uncles diary at the battle of loos. He mentioned that he marched up to Mazingarbe on the "red road" I would be grateful for any information on its location, particularly any trench maps that show it. The modern map of the area shows a short track call "le chemin des soldats" could this be it? thanks in advance, Arch
andigger Posted 11 November , 2004 Posted 11 November , 2004 Just playing around, but also hoping to help answer the question, I found a similar question posted at the thread below. Although it also has few replies, hopefully someone can add some insight this time. Andy http://1914-1918.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=5138&hl=loos
n cherry Posted 17 November , 2004 Posted 17 November , 2004 Sorry, never heard of a Red Road perhaps it was a route in coloured red on a map or denoted by red flags...similar to tac signs used by units such as medical ones to denote location etc, routes in and out. Just a guess as I don't think anyone ever answered the red flag question....
Guest François NOURY Posted 19 November , 2004 Posted 19 November , 2004 Hello to everybody, at first: i'm very sorry for my bad english. battle of loos Posted Tuesday at 19:54 Posted Tuesday at 19:54 Good evening, I bring the subject up. The Red Road corresponds to the "Chemin des Soldats" which at the time was made up of red earth schist brought up from the mine shafts. Until the 90s, in some settlements (housing estates for miners) had their streets made of red earth. Kind regards Michel
