ianmccallum Posted 3 January , 2014 Share Posted 3 January , 2014 Hi Guys, Anyone got information on the location of the 5th Field Survey Company in March 1918. On Somme somewhere and caught up in the German Offensive. Cheers Ian
Ron Clifton Posted 3 January , 2014 Share Posted 3 January , 2014 Hello Ian The War Diary should tell you. It is in the National Archives at Kew in this file: WO 95/492 5 Field Survey Company Royal Engineers 1917 Jan. - 1919 Apr. I don't think it has been digitised yet so a persopnal visit to Kew may be needed. Ron
ianmccallum Posted 3 January , 2014 Author Share Posted 3 January , 2014 Hi Ron, Thanks for that. I am in Glasgow so I am hoping someone else might have been researching the unit over same period. Ian
SapperBoo Posted 16 March , 2014 Share Posted 16 March , 2014 Hello Ian, At the moment of the attack (21 March) the groups and sections of 5th Field Survey Company were spread from Chauny in the south to Fins in the north with Company HQ at Nesle. Just a snippet from the book, Artillery's Astrologers (A history of British survey and mapping on the Western Front 1914 -1918) by Peter Chasseaud. There are 10 pages (of over 500) in the book covering the 5 FSC in the German Offensive - March 1918. Is there a group, section or individual you are looking for?
