Dbaulch Posted 30 December , 2013 Share Posted 30 December , 2013 Hello Forum, My Great Grandfather, William George Baulch served as regimental sergeant major for the 17th London Regiment in 1917 (previously of the 10th Rifle Brigade service battalion). The only medal index card I can locate in the national archives/ancestry is a hand written entry for his Meritorious Service Medal. Am i right in thinking all the standard WW1 medals, War medal/victory medal etc were only awarded for service overseas and that is why he was not awarded them? Any help in clearing this up would be greatly appreciated many thanks Dav
johndavidswarbrick Posted 30 December , 2013 Share Posted 30 December , 2013 Hi Dav, It is my understanding that the standard medals were only available to those men who saw service overseas/active war theatre - see here for a little more information [scroll down to the info on each medal] http://www.greatwar.co.uk/medals/ww1-campaign-medals.htm Dave Swarbrick
Dbaulch Posted 30 December , 2013 Author Share Posted 30 December , 2013 Thanks Dave. Certainly looks like you had to be overseas to get them which explains this perfectly.
Sepoy Posted 30 December , 2013 Share Posted 30 December , 2013 Sgt Major Baulch's Meritorious Service Medal was announced in the London Gazette (Peace Gazette No.60) of 22nd February, 1919.
