Remembered Today:

Witness to a Recruit's Attestation

Just a (hopefully) quick query, if I may:

In an officer's service record I have found a copy of his attestation form from when he originally enlisted as a Private soldier.

His signature has been witnessed by one of his old schoolfriends (I recognise the name) but this has been crossed out and another signature that I don't recognise written alongside.

I have since discovered that the schoolfriend had himself attested only the day before.

Did the fact that the friend was technically now a soldier disqualify him from being a witness to another man's enlistment?

Any advice appreciated and thanks in advance,

Bob.

Bob,

My own grandfathers attestation form was witnessed by one of his comrades who includes his rank in his signature, this was in late 1915.

Stuart,

Thanks for that - sorry not to have replied earlier.

Interesting. I wonder why his mate's signature was crossed out? They were great schoolmates and served together until one of them was commissioned.
