Crowdsourcing IWM's First World War Art Collection

Something that might be of interest - IWM are hosting another Putting Art on the Map event next month (10th December), this time delving into the works of official war artist William Orpen.

Quite an exciting opportunity as it's being hosted in the Orpen Boardroom at IWM London, which houses some of his paintings rarely seen by the public. IWM curators will introduce the works, and then it's over to you to help enrich them with greater detail and contextual information.

Should be a really interesting day (especially if you're a fan of William Orpen's works!), and I'm sure the expertise from the forum here would be much appreciated if anyone can make it.

I've attached the flyer with all the details of how to RSVP if anyone's interested.

For those that can't attend, a large number of his paintings, both Great War (including the IWM's) and others can be found on the BBC Your Paintings website Click

This event has been rescheduled now, no set date yet but it's looking likely it'll be in March!

and if you're really interested his memoir 'An Onlooker in France' is available as a free download from Project Gutenberg, sadly the illustrations are b/w but a good read.

Hi all,

This event has been rescheduled now for Tuesday the 4th March. It would be great to see some of you at the event if you were interested in attending - it's a great opportunity to view some fantastic paintings by William Orpen that aren't open to the general public, and your expertise would be a huge help to us in exploring the artworks.

Thanks,

Matt
