Harper Posted 30 November , 2013 Share Posted 30 November , 2013 Leading Seaman Peter Beatty RN died 23 July 1917 and is buried in New Orleans. The joint memorial marker gives his details as " SS.970 (Devon/RFR/3260/B). S.S. "Baysarna."" - see photo This information is the same as on the CWGC website. I am unable to locate any information about SS "Baysarna" nor "Devon/RFR". Also if he was "RN" as the marker says, why was he on a merchant ship? Can anyone help? Many thanks Harper

horatio2 Posted 30 November , 2013 Share Posted 30 November , 2013 Almost certainly a seaman gunner on a Defensively Amed Merchant Ship (DAMS), he had been mobilised from the Royal Fleet Reserve (RFR), home base Devonport.
Terence Munson Posted 1 December , 2013 Share Posted 1 December , 2013 I believe the ships name is/was S.S. Baysarua 1916 -1921, built 1913 as Masarua and according to FMP Peter Beatty was drowned. Terry
