Old Tom Posted 18 November , 2013 Share Posted 18 November , 2013 I find myself somewhat confused by the changes to these forces in the period leading to WW1. The various reserves, militias, yeomanries, and others? seem to be difficult to classify in terms of their roles and the effectivenes of their recruitment and training. Can anyone point me to book that deals with the principles rather than the detail of individual units? Old Tom
Graham Stewart Posted 18 November , 2013 Share Posted 18 November , 2013 Two that may help, although I haven't as yet got them, may be "Defending Albion - Britains Home Army 1908-1919" and "Englands Last Hope - The T.F. 1908-14" both written by K.W. Mitchinson.

Glen Posted 20 November , 2013 Share Posted 20 November , 2013 Field pocket-book for the auxiliary forces (1873) - https://archive.org/details/fieldpocketbook00wolsgoog May be of interest - even if a little early as it gives some idea of procedures on which training would be based
