133.R Posted 17 November , 2013 Share Posted 17 November , 2013 Hi maybe anybody can help and say more about this shell ( the left shell). I dont have enough information about this shell from the seller...only that it is a 4 inch shell and the fuse is dated with RL 7/1917..... Many thanks. centurion Posted 17 November , 2013 Share Posted 17 November , 2013 Left from which viewpoint? Is it the blue or the grey(ish) shell?
Gareth Davies Posted 17 November , 2013 Share Posted 17 November , 2013 I'd say the blue one, the one on the left as one looks at the picture, as the one on the right (as one looks at the picture) has a Doppler Zunder fuse.
Gareth Davies Posted 17 November , 2013 Share Posted 17 November , 2013 I am going to hazard a guess and say it is a Percussion Fuse No 101(not sure which mark though).
133.R Posted 17 November , 2013 Author Share Posted 17 November , 2013 The fuse is a 101.Marked R L 7/17.I meant the blue shell. Regards Sven
Michael Haselgrove Posted 18 November , 2013 Share Posted 18 November , 2013 Sven, I am uncertain how accurate the dealer's measurement of 4 inches is, but the shell looks to me very like a British 4.5in howitzer shell. The 4.5in QF (quick firing) Field Howitzer was introduced into service prior to the Great War and remained in British service until 1944. Given that the shell and cartridge were separate, the details of calibre, date of manufacture, etc. are most probably to be found on the base of the shell and, before you consider purchasing, perhaps the dealer in question can tell you what is to be seen there.
