verdun Posted 13 November , 2013 Share Posted 13 November , 2013 Information required, please, on this officer who was KIA on 04/04/16 2/Lt. Arthur William PASSMORE. I have his MIC, but would like to know more about the circumstances of his death. The Long, Long Trail shows that 9/RWS were a training battalion. Consequently, I cannot 'match' the battalion's movements with timing of 2/Lt. Passmore's death. If anyone has the battalion War Diary, that would be great, but any information gratefully received. Many thanks!
Stebie9173 Posted 13 November , 2013 Share Posted 13 November , 2013 Second Lieutenant Passmore was attached to the 6th Battalion: http://qrrarchive.websds.net/PDF/QW01619160401.pdf (just followed a "hunch") Link to war diary pages for the Regiment as a whole: http://www.queensroyalsurreys.org.uk/war_diaries/war_diaries_home.shtml Steve. verdun Posted 13 November , 2013 Author Share Posted 13 November , 2013 Many thanks indeed Steve. Just to be clear - are you thinking therefore that the CWGC and ODGW have mistaken '6th' for '9th', or that he was in the 9th. but was attached to the 6th at the time of his death? Stebie9173 Posted 13 November , 2013 Share Posted 13 November , 2013 I think 9th attached 6th. When officers were Commissioned into the Special reserve (3rd Battalion of most Regiments) before the war it was usual for officers to be attached to other battalions rather than officially transferred, especially to Regular battalions. I believe that the procedure was mirrored in the "Second Reserve" battalions like the 9th Queen's, though the "boundary" in that case was actually only in the mind of any "snobbish" (in terms of pre-war regular) officers rather than officially a different "type" of Battalion or commission. His officers file at Kew will probably show the definitive description. Steve.
