EDWARD1 Posted 30 October , 2013 Share Posted 30 October , 2013 Reading through the War Diary of the above, there are two maps showing the disposition of the Stokes guns ( one copy attached which is south of Agny 51c SE M 15) Was it the usual practice to print them upside down as both are ie south to the top of page. connaughtranger Posted 31 October , 2013 Share Posted 31 October , 2013 I have a Barrage Map for Messines which has the trench map itself "right-way-up" ie north at the top, but the barrage lines are overprinted upside down, so to read them the map has to be turned round. From this perspective I suppose, you are looking "towards" the German lines with your own trenches behind you. Odd really, since all too often (especially at Messines) with N-S aligned maps, the British were looking from behind the German lines towards their own.
