rayg Posted 4 November , 2013 Share Posted 4 November , 2013 Fred has some beautiful rifles. Here's the three early 03's I have. First is a 1917 dated one. Ray
rayg Posted 4 November , 2013 Share Posted 4 November , 2013 Next is an early Rock Island rifle. Rock Island Arsenal never completed rifles in the rod bayonet pattern due to the change to the blade bayonet and then again the change from 30-03 cal. to 30-06. So the first completed rifles from Rock Island were assembled with these early parts but in 30-06. This is my RI rifle with a rod bayonet receiver and a barrel that was converted from the 30-03 cal. to 30-06 by the Arsenal. Every thing is correct as one of the first fully assembled and issued Arsenal assembled rifles, Ray
rayg Posted 4 November , 2013 Share Posted 4 November , 2013 And the third is a Springfield that was originally to built as a rod bayonet 30-03 rifle. These rifles were recalled by the arsenal, disassembled and re-assembled as 30-06 rifles between the years of 1906-10. What's also interesting is it still had it's original rare wooden parts container in the butt compartment, Ray For some reason I can't upload any more photos. Don't know why as this is the only one that would load
Whitedog Posted 6 November , 2013 Author Share Posted 6 November , 2013 Man, you've got some Grand looking 1903's Ray! Fantastic! I really like the platinum lines in that early sight slide on the last rifle too. I've used one of the early rifles with that feature long ago on a 100 yard range and the platinum lines really assisted in placing my shots. Too bad they didn't continue it in later production. That wooden parts container that you found in the butt trap of your rifle is the only example so far that I've heard of that has provenance to it. Quite rare! Wow!
