Remembered Today:

Silver War Badge

Recommended Posts

Hello, not sure if I have posted this in the right area, apology's if I haven't, new to the site.

I have a silver war badge(vertical pin,1st issue I believe) and I am looking to find who it originally belonged too.

I am hoping its someone from my past, as I am currently researching my family history(gut feeling however is telling me it isn't from my family history).

I have tried looking at the national archives, but I am unsure where to look, I think it may be under WO perhaps?, not sure.

I believe the silver war badge roll is under name and not serial or service number, am I right?, if I am, then I have a lot of researching to do.

The serial number I have is xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, which from what I have learnt is from September 1916 to march 1918.

I do have another question regarding my great grandfather's royal flying corp uniform(but that is for the "Uniform section)

If anyone can help point me in the right direction, then that would be great.

Many thanks.

Welcome to the forum.

Sorry, I have edited your post to remove the badge number. You should be able to find the answer on Ancestry, where the Silver War badges records are available by selecting SEARCH Military, and then on the right View all in card catalogue, which will reveal a link to the SWB rolls.

Forum rules ban requests for look ups, but if you don't have Ancestry membership you can get free access at most local reference libraries, or can take out a two week trial, make your search and if you wish cancel quickly. The rule exists because we must not provide a way for our members to use Ancestry by proxy, I'm sure you will appreciate that.

Good luck with your research

Keith Roberts

EDIT: I don't think you can find the records for the SWB at kew from the number(unless someone knows better), but the advanced search option on the Ancestry site after following the route that I have suggested should work.

Great news..sort of.

Have found the person who the badge belongs too(once again, many thanks Keith & Sepoy for your help,it worked a treat), no idea who he is, sadly definitely not someone from the family.

Keith,

With regard to SWB numbers, some of us are able to identify who was awarded a Silver War Badge from the number alone without the use of ancestry but by using years of our own research. Maybe if you had allowed the number to remain then we could have helped without breaking forum look up rules.

I think you are being way too cautious etc. When I queried my Grandfather's SWB on the forum another member was able to answer the question using his own resources - nothing to do with the bloodsuckers altruistic gentlemen at Ancestry

I appreciate the points made, but am prone to err as you know on the side of caution.

Having spent years researching these badges I feel it completely wrong of you to decide that I am not allowed to impart some of the knowledge I have acquired for free just because there is a large firm out there that charges for this information. They do not own the copyright to my research. What next, may be I will not be able to mention that my great uncle was killed in 1917 in case I upset the CWGC

Keith with respect'

Whilst I appreciate what a difficult job a moderator has

The op DG1 did not pacifically ask for a look up on Ancestry therefore he was not

breaking any forum rules

The o p DG1 asked who the silver war badge number 382336 belonged to,

As previously pointed out by Steve "Ancestry" is not the only source of this information

As I understand it

Whilst the images of the Silver War Badge rolls on Ancestry are Ancestry's copyright

the information contained in silver war badge rolls are not

Could you please reconsider your decision

regards Ray

It's always a hard call. I agree entirely that the information itself is not subject to copyright, and I quite appreciate that the members of this forum have amazing amounts of knowledge, and that some of them can answer queries that for most of us requires access to paid sites. We try to draw a line that is sufficient to ensure that the commercial companies don't turn awkward, as we simply could not afford financially to resist a legal action. That said, neither I or any other Mod devote our time to scouring new posts for issues - we occasionally spot some, and we sometimes respond to reports made by members who are keen to ensure that we don't end up with problems.

Clear and direct requests for look ups are nearly always reported or spotted these days, the call on requests that might be seen as unwitting or even in some cases disguised requests of that sort is not so simple. I'm pleased that the member has his answer, and all I can add to that, is that I try to be consistent - maybe I sometimes get it wrong, that is entirely possible, and maybe one of my colleagues might have viewed the specific post differently.

We all try to be helpful, and I'm sure most are aware that in being helpful members can sometimes go too far in providing information from sources that require subscription access . I do appreciate that on so many subjects we do have members with specialised knowledge, but in the end, the Mod who picks something up has to take a view. Maybe I was a bit on the hard side, but then again, I really don't want the GWF to end up under threat. I don't think it will happen, and that is because we try to steer a course that will prevent that. The comments made have been noted, and won't be ignored. That is as much as I can say
