colin12 Posted 23 September , 2004 Share Posted 23 September , 2004 1st November this year will be the 90th Anniversary of this Battle, as far as we know there are only two memorials dedicated solely to Coronel the biggest loss of naval life since Traflagar (over 1700) One is in Stanley, Falklands and another in Coronel, Chile(we have not seen a picture of this as yet). If you know of any other, not single dedications, please let us know, have a look at our dedication site www.coronel.org.uk The two ships sunk were HMS Good Hope flagship of Admiral Craddock and HMS Monmouth. Thanks for reading this, perhaps you can help make people aware Colin
Frank_East Posted 23 September , 2004 Share Posted 23 September , 2004 If I remember rightly the first name on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial is one Admiral Sir Christopher Craddock. Being a Yorkshireman,he is also remembered by his bust in York Minster. He served with distinction in the Sudan and in China in the 19th century. Other than that history appears not to be kind to him.He is remembered by the fact that he presided over the first British Navy defeat in battle for over a century Regards Frank East
colin12 Posted 23 September , 2004 Author Share Posted 23 September , 2004 Hi Frank, Thanks for the comments, of course you are right, but I am looking for Memorials for the Battle as a whole, my Grandfather is on the Southsea Memorial. Cheers Colin
