Jon lee Posted 3 October , 2013 Share Posted 3 October , 2013 Hi all, Just to complete his biographical details for the regimental history of the Jodhpur lancers (which he served with 1900-1902), would anyone be able to shed any light on how Major or Lt Col Edward Malcolm Hughes, 14th Bengal lancers (Born 1869) died in Basra on 11th September 1916? He could have been attached to another unit at the time, or on the staff. I can't find him on De Ruvigny's roll, or the bond of sacrifice, nor CWG . (The information of his date and place of death comes from probate records). Would someone be kind enough to look him up on the 1915 or 1916 IAL list to see if it mentions an attachment? many many thanks Jon

Old Owl Posted 8 October , 2013 Share Posted 8 October , 2013 Hi Jon, E.M.Hughes was educated at Wellington College, Berkshire, 1882-1885. His entry shows: Son of Maj.Gen.T.E.Hughes, R.A.; RMC 1889; XV.; Manchester Regt. 1889.; ISC 1891.; Capt. 1901.; Major 1907.; China 1900-01.; Somaliland F.F. 1903.; Great War 1914-16. Lt.Col. 1915. Died on active service 1916. I guess he died from disease or some natural cause, but if you contact Wellington College then there is a good chance that they may have a more detailed obituary/biography in their Year Book for 1916. Hope this helps. Robert
