Hi all,

Joseph Ryle Clarke (J.R. CLARK) on Ancestry, was with the KOYLI when wounded, after a lengthy stay in hospital he rejoined the 3rd KOYLI I believe as Captain. In 1920 he was issued a Silver War Badge, why ? I thought you had to be discharged before you got a badge but it looks like he carried on in the army, is this correct or am I having a senior moment !

Dean.

Dean, I do believe you are correct. The Silver war Badge was issued if discharged due to injury or illness resulting from Military Service. Is it possible this fellow was discharged, then reenlisted?

Does this help? London Gazette #31229, dated 14th March 1919, Page 3462......

3rd Yorks. L. I. — Capt. J. R. Clarke is placed on the ret. list on account of ill-health caused by wounds. 15th Mar. 1919.

Regards

Steve

Steve, could I recap and you confirm ?

He was injured, as a Lieut. with the KOYLI.

He was promoted to Capt. whilst being 'injured' and recovering.

What is the ret. List ?

Dean.

ret. list is retired list. Basically a list of officers "who by reason of age, length of service, failure of promotion, or physical disability are relieved from active military service and retired with reduced pay".
