I recently purchased at auction a copy of the above book ex Norfolk & Norwich Library.

I appreciate that the maps that came with the book will be very hard to purchase, or get hold of, if at all.

Is there anywhere I can get copies of some of these maps, obviously willing to pay.

What size were the originals ?.

Really interested in Nos. 5 through to 11 (not too greedy am I ?)

thanks

Sets do turn up - frequently lower in price because the set may not be complete. Try Turner Donovan, good military specialist book dealers with fast moving stock. They might be prepared to find a set for you with a map or two missing.

Thanks Glen and David

Should have known about the WFA

Ordered a DVD (I believe full set of maps) this morning by phone, no online shopping at the moment

The maps are very good. However, worth noting that, for example, as regards the daily mapping for First Ypres, that the dispositions shown are for the evening of that day. So, again for example, if you are following what happened on 23 October, it would be wise to have the maps for both the 22nd and the 23rd in front of you. Indeed, First Ypres gets to such a pitch that units are split up and to be found all over the place - even more so in the case of formations - and the resulting complexity makes for real difficulties for the cartographer.

Plenty of 1914 volumes on the net, as with most books the earlier volumes are the easiest to find, there are two volumes of maps for the 1914 volumes i do not know which one you are looking for ? i am intersted in the fact your book is ex Norwich City Library, before i purchased my set i asked about this book at the Norwich Library but was told the whole set had been sold several years before, as with most Librarys they have no real concern for the books in thier possesion!

I suppose space is the libraries' principal concern. My complete set came originally from the National Liberal Club, and that was about thirty years ago.

I only have this one book, found in a box at auction in St Andrews

France and Belgium 1914

It doesn't say Volume 1 though I believe it must be.

Norfolk & Norwich Library

Guildhall. Hill. Norwich

The label inside says Presented by The Royal Norfolk Regiment Association

thanks others for your advice

The key to the official histories when there is more than one volume for a year is the number of stars on the spine. The dates covered are of course clear once the volume is opened.

Apologies for a slight hijack, but 1914 OH used to be available free on the net somewhere. I used to have it in my bookmarks on an old computer but have long since lost it. A few weeks ago I had need to check something and numerous 'googles' later I came out empty handed. Anyone know where it is (if it's still there)?

You might want to bear in mind that 1914 volume 1 ran to three editions with major additions by the third edition.

I believe that the map box was also modified/enlarged.

Thanks Martin

Is there much important difference between 1925 and 1933 editions, what is the word ?

Quite right Andrew, though I've only ever found the first two volumes ....

Military operations, France and Belgium, 1914 Vol. 1 - Aug-Oct 1914 (3rd ed., 1937) : http://archive.org/details/3edmilitaryopera01edmouoft

Military operations, France and Belgium, 1914 Vol. 2 - Oct-Nov 1914 (1925) : http://archive.org/details/3edmilitaryopera02edmouoft

I've never found the maps that were published separately.

1922 1st edition: http://archive.org/details/militaryoperatio01edmouoft

I don't think the 2nd edition is online anywhere

From the Preface to 3rd edition ...

E.J Morten Booksellers in Didsbury usually has most of the Official History volumes available: http://www.abebooks.co.uk/e.j-morten-booksellers-ba-manchester/255555/sf

As well as a good range of other Great War material. I've had KRRC material off them in the past and they know their stuff.

Mods: hope this is a permissible puff :-)
