James A Pratt III Posted 29 August , 2013 Posted 29 August , 2013 This is from the Osprey book "The French Poilu 1914-1918" French nurses wore all-white uniforms, with a dark blue cape (white in the colonies) for walking out. The cape bore a badge consisting of a red cross with letters denoting individual organisations-CRF (Criox Rouge Francaise), SBM (Societe de Secours aux Blesses Militaires), or UFF (Union des Femmes de France). for dirty, non medical work, the white blouse (bourgeron) was replaced by a pattern in grey or blue. 71,193 women served as nurses during the war of whom 375 lost their lives.
James A Pratt III Posted 11 November , 2013 Author Posted 11 November , 2013 There is also more information on them in the book "French Women and the First World War" Margaret H Darrow
Umeu Posted 5 September , 2018 Posted 5 September , 2018 Sorry for reviving this thread, not sure if it's preferred to open a new thread or revive an old one. I'm looking for some information about the recruitment procedure/criteria for French (volunteer) nurses. Basically what would a job ad have looked like if they'd had one for that position.
Jim Strawbridge Posted 6 September , 2018 Posted 6 September , 2018 Does any of the books mentioned list the 375 French nurses that died by name.

Welcome to the forum Sadly I don't think I can answer your question exactly, I'm sure someone out there will probably be able to. A quick search has found these, not sure if they will be the answer though https://prezi.com/78ijvlqbnh79/french-nurses-in-world-war-1/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25069359 http://webdoc.france24.com/ww1-women-war-british-nurses-french-army/ http://anzacs-roleofwoman-ww1.weebly.com/role-of-nurses.html Good luck with your research David

healdav Posted 7 September , 2018 Posted 7 September , 2018 If you are interested in French medical services, there is a book, "Le Service de Santé 1914-1918" ISBN 978-2-7587-0116-3. This, i French, gives every detail that you could ever wish to know about the French medical services, with, among other thing, illustrations of every type and grade of uniform. It came out in 2014.
