McCudden Posted 23 August , 2013 Share Posted 23 August , 2013 Attached is a picture of a medal ribbon bar I bought at a boot sale many years ago which I thought may be of interest. I would be grateful if someone could tell me when these were issued (were they even official?) and if there are many still around. I've not seen another but they may be common as grass! Many thanks Alec

Staffsyeoman Posted 24 August , 2013 Share Posted 24 August , 2013 I have seen plenty of these. They were private purchase sold by military tailors and the like - mainly intended for civilians for putting on civilian clothes, as servicemen would have them sewn directly to the uniform (unless tropical dress). The typeface on the card makes me think that these are considerably post-WW1; similar ones were around during and after WW2 with those contemporary ribbons as well. Nice to have, not that rare, but less common than they were.
squirrel Posted 24 August , 2013 Share Posted 24 August , 2013 And the medal bar is upside down according to what is printed on the card.
McCudden Posted 24 August , 2013 Author Share Posted 24 August , 2013 I agree the type and style of the card looks 1940's or 50's which means it was intended to be purchased by/for old soldiers, presumably to wear on their lapel. As for the medal bar being upside down, that's my fault when I assembled it for the photograph! Alec
von Smallhausen Posted 24 August , 2013 Share Posted 24 August , 2013 Hello Alec, It seems the card exist in different sizes. Yours is n° 4. The one in my collection is n° 5 ( see under left corner) and has a ribbon more. kind regards, Jef
