Hi Guys, when did they stop putting on Piling Swivels on No1 Mk3 SMLE's and did they remove the fitting?? Has anyone got a spare used Piling Swivel with screw they could part with?

1941 pretty much with the introduction of the No4, all the trials rifles No1 MkVI & trials No4s all came with piling swivels, cutoffs & butt discs, Lithgow & Ishapore stopped machining the lug around then & Ishapore later omitted the lug completely

The piling swivel was omitted along with the windage rearsight and magazine cut off, and the milling was removed from the rearsight protector wings to speed up production. when the Mk III was designated III* in 1916 IIRC You will always find anomalies as parts were wasted away lots of Mk III* having the forend with wood to take a mag cut off.

The MkIII was NOT designated the MkIII* in 1916 & neither was the cutoff deleted, you should read the LoC of 1916 again or for the first time.

The LoC of 1916 was in 2 parts

Part 1 was to cover the FUTURE PRODUCTION of the MkIII by omitting certain things from production.

Part 2 was the INTRODUCTION of the MkIII* which was the SAME as a MkIII but without the cutoff & as it was the same as a MkIII the Mods covered in part 1 also applied.

I should add, in the early 1920s a new pattern of piling swivel that was narrower was introduced, my 1935 Lithgow's & my 1941 Lithgow all have the narrow piling swivel fitted & they are all marked MA which dates them post 1926.
