It's what Country is all about.

Heart on sleeve, bare emotion, tragedy and hope.

It's a different lyrical tradition to our own and is of course

a heap of crap.

" Can't argue with that. Mind, I might if I could hear any of the lyrics... "

Aye, not very clear. It's a bit of a rough recording, but I thought that might be deliberate, to put over the shell-shock idea? I had a look for the lyrics, but can't find them. I think it might just be a local bloke, uploading his home recording. There's something about it, and I'd buy it.

A folk song about a WW1 veteran, who returns home shell shocked , as time goes by people forget his story , he becomes a down and out. War veterans should not be forgotten.

Words

around the toon, around the toon you might see my shadow

In the pends and vennels ower the hill by Higgins meadow

a goan aboot man, jist hurlin, jist hurlin the barra

listenin fur the shells that fly and freeze you to the marra..

summer ahint the auld pit bing, in brummle flower`s and briars

bilin nettles in ma billy can ower ma wee bit fire

in dreams I tramp Flanders field wi ma freends an brithers

quickened by machine gun fire, as thoosans fa` the gither

winter I wid billet warm in some fermers bothy

and bother nane that leaves me alane , tae camp doon by the Brothy

blawn tae hell we hunker doon , yin nixt tae the ither

tink and toff, man tae man , greets sair fur their mither

the folk today shout go away, I wish, I wish in vain

that I had fell among my friends far fae torment and pain

around the toon you micht see ma shadow

in the pends and vennels ower the hill by hairy Higgins meadow

After playing post 6, my cat is now hiding in the cupboard and the wife's not speaking to me.

Cheers Andy.

I assume the lyrics are appalling and he has decently made them unintelligible? Good man!

difficult to know it this is good, or bad. I suspect bad. Interesting video though.

It is immensely superior to the load of guff preceding it. The shawm playing is very fine and Johnny Turk has an uncanny knack for shooting at the lorries carrying huge quantities of petrol. Where were the Aussies?

Unfortunately, they are available.

A short story I wrote about a teenage Irish american boy who is facing his imminent end on a field in WW I turned into a song.

It's the end of my road

And dark's the fate of man

The devils run in fear

From God's sweeping hand

The sky are filled with fire

As riders take their souls

and pain is all I feel

Under these bloody clothes

Take me away

Give my soul to this wind

I am afraid to die today

In my heart I know I have sinned

All I can do now is pray

in this cold, wetted field I lie

It soil pulls me down

Anyone who would hear our cries?

Would know this is wrong

My cross held tight in my hand

The powder's smoke' so strong

All my mind can see

Is my mom's saddened frown

She says son get up and run for the hills

Mom I am afraid to try today

I don't think that I will be home in the spring

I'm so far away

And in this distant land

Our lives were felled too soon

My body weakening still

From this mortal wound

Our story it ends tonight

We braved our enemies

In this field in a country not ours

Now alone here we bleed

Take me away

Give my soul to this wind

I am afraid to die today

In my heart I know I have sinned

All I can do now is pray

I'm maybe being a bit harsh on all the lad, but it all seems a bit contrived? It's probably quite difficult to write about the Great War, but I reckon the man in post #16 made a great job of it, with great, honest lyrics. So it can be done.

Shawm Is that what it's called. That's the one the snake charmers use?

Is there a thread somewhere for "Best song of WW1"? I would like to nominate "Keep right on to the end of the road" by Harry Lauder, written for his son K.I.A. I wonder if my footballing allegiance has influenced my choice. K.R.O.

Mike, do you have a death wish or are you feeling not quite well? Maybe you should get out more.
