Hi all,

Can anybody help with identifying what the white triangle patch on this soldiers uniform represents?

Many thanks

Neil

Don't know the significance of the patch but they appear to be POWs. You can just make out the armband shape let into their left upper arms.

Many thanks for that.

That's is interesting. The man seated is a friends grandfather but I don't think she is aware of the fact hat he was a POW.

I'm not sure if I can make out the armbands... Are they just above the elbow?

Yes, looks like POWs. The armband would have been a brown colour and is sewn into the left hand arm only.

There's a similar post on another forum with a very similar query (it was 6 years ago though!), and a reference to an armband and white triangular patch on the breast pocket? Is it connected perhaps?

Brilliant, thanks guys!

I don't think they are connected but it's a great link, thanks.

The soldier seated is her grandad who served with the 5th Cheshire's.

Thanks again

So is this a studio photo whilst POW's?

If so, how common is this?

They look like they are wearing new uniforms and one has a pocket watch ?

Sorry for all the questions

I've corrected the link above to the main version (as opposed to the wap version I originally posted). The second photo in the link shows a studio type shot, with an armband and white (?) triangle clearly visible.

Well, that clears that up.

Excellent :-)

Perhaps they were taken by the prison 'authorities' so that the soldiers could post them back home as proof of their good treatment in captivity?

Yes, I was thinking that. That would explain the pristine uniforms etc!

Have you thought about the ICRC archive - the grand daughter can apply to see if they have any records on her Grandfather. Looks like it takes a while though.

EDIT - Er, should have read the whole web page. They're not accepting any requests until next year. Sorry!
