stuart rowles Posted 1 July , 2013 Share Posted 1 July , 2013 re: 1914 Star, 1914-15 Star, BWM & Victory Medal. Are there any copies of the Medal Rolls other than at Kew. I am particularly interested in those for the Manchester Regiment and the Devon Regiment. Living in Devon it's such a long way to travel. Or are there any plans to put them on-line for the centenary. 8055Bell Posted 2 July , 2013 Share Posted 2 July , 2013 Rollo, If you're interested in the Manchester Regt., try http://themanchesters.org/forum/index.php or pay for websites have Medal Index Cards. John Hartley on GWF is also a Manchester guru. What's your particular interest with the Manchester Regiment? T
stuart rowles Posted 3 July , 2013 Author Share Posted 3 July , 2013 One of my ROWLES has no battalion listed on his medal index card. He is Thomas Rowles, Manchester Regiment, Private, No. 48400. I know nothing else about him as the name is too common to even guess at a birth date. If I knew that battalion at least I might have some idea where he served. 8055Bell Posted 7 July , 2013 Share Posted 7 July , 2013 Rollo, I didn't recognise the number but a bit of a check on CWGC shows 48496 Sidney Lowe in 19th Battalion. Sidney died in April 1917 and is commemorated at the Arras Memorial. We could make an informed guess that Thomas was also 19th with a 'similar' number. Equally William Molyneux of the 6th Battalion 48484 died in August 1918, being commemorated on the Vis en Artois Memorial. I'll see if I can found out more. 8055Bell Posted 7 July , 2013 Share Posted 7 July , 2013 48400 Thomas Rowles 48403 James Pattinson 48404 Alfred Shawcross 48405 George Pritchard Similar MICs showing BWM and Victory Medals - but no Battn. indicated. George Pritchard has a 2nd MIC for M/Chr. Depot showing enlistment 30/5/1916 and discharge 10/10/1917. The other names may lead to a Battalion... John_Hartley Posted 7 July , 2013 Share Posted 7 July , 2013 The only way to be sure is to look at the medal rolls. Everything else is guesswork.
stuart rowles Posted 13 August , 2013 Author Share Posted 13 August , 2013 Thank you to everyone for their input. It does seem likely then that he would have been in the 19th battalion. The Medal Rolls are the obvious next step. Does anyone know if these are likely to be put online in the near future?
harribobs Posted 12 September , 2013 Share Posted 12 September , 2013 Everything else is guesswork I am really amazed that so called 'experts' on the Manchester Regiment don't reffer people to the Manchester Regiment Forum where medal rolls, WD's, Regimental museum and archives and so much more are available http://themanchesters.org/forum/index.php
