Remembered Today:

Auld Reekie - artillery

I have two postcards featuring a named artillery piece "Auld Reekie". I cannot find any other reference to a piece with this name. Can anyone offer any clues from the pictures or has anyone encountered it before? Also, what is the likely calibre of the piece?

Thanks in advance.

Alastair

Hello Alastair

I don't think they are of the same gun. The lower one looks like an 8-inch howitzer, and the top one might be a 6-inch gun, a 60-pounder, or (most likely in my view) a 4.7-inch gun.

The Lowland Division's Heavy Battery in 1914 was armed with the 4.7-inch and was based in Edinburgh - the original Auld Reekie.

Thank you Ron, I missed the Edinburgh connection.
