It's not quite what the description suggests - this was not presented to him on his retirement (i.e by a grateful government), it was presented to him by the mayor of Ramsgate when he was given freedom of the city... not quite the same...

Nice to have a photo of the presentation, though. Think £20k may be a little optimistic...

I am in a quandary,

I have just seen a War Medal to a 1915 casualty on E-Bay and I have his 14-15 star in my collection now do I get into a bidding war or just let it go. I successfully won a 14-15 star once on E-bay to go with a Victory medal I already owned to the Manchester Pals casualty but it cost £70+

So should I do it again ?

Hey all, I'm trying to hunt down the original Medals for my Relative Rifleman Leonard Grimley R/37927, I am also looking for his original Death Plaque. I have searched across the Internet but as yet I have had no luck. I'm just trying to bring them home to where they belong.

If anyone has any ideas of what the best steps are for me I would be very grateful.

I am in a similar situation, looking for my Grandfathers medals, George Scott, Royal Scots Fusiliers WW1. I registered at http://www.medalsgonemissing.com/ in the hope that if they crop up I can buy them back. I'm always trawling ebay to check for them so I think I'll do a saved search too. There have been cases where individuals have located medals to their relatives on the forum. I did not wish to get your hopes up too high because it can be as long as 45 years before medals re-enter the market after being sold. There are a large number of collectors of pensionable age who do not have a clue how to use the internet and do not buy any related publications that advertise.

I have taken the plunge, I contacted the seller but although he tried to list it as a Buy-it-Now because of bids he was unable to do so,

So I've bid and won it, all be it at an inflated price £80+ but it was worth it to reunite the war medal with the star.... now I've just got to wait for the victory and Plaque.

Re-unites are always a good thing and if the medals have some good research with them, you'll never live in regret in making that purchase.

Although, 80 pounds does seem a tad high in my opinion. Was there some interesting information about the soldier?

I agree that £80 is a tad high but I have recently sold a War medal privately for a RB casualty so the difference was not to great.

I do not have a great deal of interesting info on Walter, it was just more about being a South Staffs collector and the date of his death 13/10/15. This was when the 46th North Midland Division attacked at the Hollenzollern redoubt and suffered dreadfully for their efforts. Plus as previously stated it's reunited 2 of his medals.

The Loos casualties usually have good newspaper reports. You deserve to find the article. Well done with that reunite!

I fairly recently bought a memorial plaque and Victory medal to a member of the South Wales Borderers and after finding out he was commemorated on his family plot's headstone I visited the location, -being fairly local to me- and whilst there his grand niece and her husband were there tending the grave. I spoke only briefly to them as she seemed a bit upset, but it was them who had recently parted with the medal and plaque as they said it had sat in a drawer for many years. I don't know if they sold them or passed them on to another member of the family who then sold them straight away and perhaps the latter was the case as they seemed surprised that I had bought them recently.

Hi. I have joined the forum just to respond to some if the posts here that assume medals are on the market because family members have no interest. It was sad to hear that some attempts to reunite medals have met with a lack of enthusiasm. My Dad's medals (covering the Delhi Durbar, service at Gallipoli and the Somme) were stolen in 1993 and it was heart breaking. They were, I think, unnamed replacements so no hope of finding them, but the fact my earliest memories are of him wearing them ready to march past the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sundays mean they were special and irreplaceable. So if you get a chance to reunite medals with descendants, please don't be put off by any previous bad experiences.

I have a small collection of medals as does my father who sadly passed away recently. I will probably need to sell both collections now and ebay seems like the best place. Should I sell them now in the run up to Christmas or wait until the Centenary? I would like to get my mum best price possible for Dads collection.

Hi John,

Post pictures and if you can a list of names, you might find takers here and if not the British medals forum is a good source too, i am a member over there too. If they are generic WW I pairs and trios and WW 2 stars with no documentation ebay may be your best market, if there are other medals and combinations - especially gallantry, a specialist auction house might an idea if you aren't in a rush for money.

I enquired about a trio in a local market. I was expecting £70 to £80 as was to a "normal" person as far as I could tell and the very unglamourus unit of ASC. Not researched and in bad condition.

The woman behind the counter quoted £300 for the set. I nearly choked! She then went on to inform me "Well the centery is approaching and I want as much as possible for them." I

All well and good the Stallholder may well "WANT" £300;; but is likely to still have them on board in 2114.. there is a vast difference between asking price and realised price, Probably purchased at a local General Auction House after watching Flig It or some such and thought as do many oppourtunists theyd make a killing off some unsuspecting punter...Good luck to her she'll have a long learning curve no doubt!!
