AlanCurragh Posted 16 June , 2013 Share Posted 16 June , 2013 We came across a grave in a remote churchyard in Dorset today, to Quartermaster Serjeant Anthony Albert Slade of the West Somerset Yeomanry who died aged 51, "at Minehead in exicution (sic) of his duty", on December 19th 1914. He is listed on CWGC (with date of death 16th not 19th) The Long Long Trail mentions the WSY having a drill station at Minehead - anyone able to shed any light on what happened to Anthony? Thanks Alan

The main points were:- He died of pneumonia at the Minehead Military Hospital. He was a native of North Perrott, Somerset. He joined the West Somerset Yemoanry at 16 years of age and served 35 years. He left a widow and six children. He was buried at Nether Cerne on Monday 21st December. Eight Sergeants of his Regiment carried him to his grave. Guest rachelscott Posted 25 January , 2017 Share Posted 25 January , 2017 Yes this is all correct he is my Great Great Grandfather. One of the six children was my great gran "Leila Armoral Slade" Here is a picture that my Nan gave me of her. If anyone has anymore information on Anthony Albert Slade please let me know as I am still researching him. Leila Armoral Slade
Eber Posted 11 March Share Posted 11 March Rachel .... a very long delayed response, but I briefly mentioned your g-g-grandfather in my book "Remembering a generation" in the section on Harold Henry Wills (1899-1973). HHW would have been your great-grandfather and was briefly in the 2nd Battalion of the Welsh Guards and served in the UK and not abroad. I came across the career of Anthony Albert Slade after I'd published the book, but I recall that the Western Gazette obituary provided a description of a most impressive life.
