willysmb42 Posted 27 May , 2013 Share Posted 27 May , 2013 I was lucky enough to come across this box at a carboot sale and bought it because it looked interesting (and because I had bought some tools from the guy and needed something to put them in.) I was having trouble identifying it and then stumbled across 2 at the recent Overlord show and was informed that they were for storing Lewis gun ammunition. I found all this very exciting and have done a little more research and came across this website.........http://www.grantsmil...ages.asp?key=65 which is great but it leaves me with one question. What is the leather strap for inside the box ? Its a shame its missing its carry handle but I am sure that I can make something up.

Andrew Upton Posted 29 May , 2013 Share Posted 29 May , 2013 Thank you very much ,that makes perfect sense ! If replicating the missing handle, it should just be simple leather strip, with a small rectangle of leather held in place with two rivets at either end after it has been put in place (which stops it from pulling through the loops). The box below is a modern copy, but illustrates the handle style well: http://7f707af5cce54c2d5f77-e3b87bed69e5e75268a1a04297bb727a.r98.cf2.rackcdn.com/catalog/product/cache/1/image/0aa9d39765634cd6ff9e5b085da19619/B/L/BL6002-1.jpg
willysmb42 Posted 29 May , 2013 Author Share Posted 29 May , 2013 Thank you for posting the picture. While at the show I took a picture as well which displays the lovely big copper rivets.
Dave1418 Posted 2 June , 2013 Share Posted 2 June , 2013 Hi, could you please post a couple more photos of the inner leather items and are there rivets or split pins holding it in. If you can PM me I can sort you out the leather carry handle and rivets. Regards Dave

Regards Dave No Problem, Just give me a couple of days and I will take some more detailed photographs and give you some measurements. The fixings look very similar to the slpit-pins on ww1 Brodie Helmets.
