Help with service record

Rob Chester

Recommended Posts

Hello, can anyone help me interpreting my Grandfather's service record.

Am I right in thinking that he was promopted to acting bombardier, then full bombardier and then given the rank of corporal and that the name after the word VICE (what does VICE mean?) is the name of the Commanding Officer recommending the promotion?

Also why the promotion to Corporal, I thought that a Bombardier in the Royal Artillery was a Corporal?

Any help much appreciated.

Vice means "in place of" (in this context)

That's how I read it. I can only find one Canarn (John) who seems to have papers on Ancestry. It might be worth having a look to see if it matches up.
