Hi everyone, i have recently come across an old vase type shell which when i researched i think it was from a 75mm french made field gun, what i would like to know is whether the serial number could shed some more light as to where or when it was actually used, or any information on this would be a great help many thanks

the serial is

75 DE C

H 699L 17 H

Many thanks again

Michael

If it is vase-like it is more likely to be a cartridge than a shell. I am sure an expert will be along with an answer soon.

Yes, it is the case for a French 75mm. "75 DE C" means "de Campagne" or "Field"

H is the manufacturer, Trefilerie et Laminoires du Havre a Gravite (excuse lack of accents)

"699L" is the Lot number and "17" is the date, 1917.

Apart from that there is nothing you can say about how or where it was used.

Regards

Are there any other marks between 75 DE C at the top and H699L 17H at the bottom, Michael? My 75 case has additional stamps showing that it was filled/refilled by the naval arsenals at Cherbourg and Rennes, and yours should have corresponding stamps showing where it was filled. They are probably smaller and more stylised than the large lettering at the top and bottom.
