hen190782 Posted 25 May , 2013 Share Posted 25 May , 2013 Good Afternoon I am working with Orangelil who is managing the Castleton Lantern Project (http://castletonlant...=lantern-slides) I have cropped insignia/patch/badge details from several of the slides and am looking for help to identify what they mean - apologies in advance for the quality! Ref 44 LHS - Naval insignia meaning Ref 56 - Cap badge and upper arm patch Ref 64 - Lower arm insignia/patches Thanks Nigel
Staffsyeoman Posted 25 May , 2013 Share Posted 25 May , 2013 Ref 56 is a Gun Layer (L in a wreath) of the Royal Artillery - either Royal Horse Artillery or Royal Field Artillery in WW1 Ref 64 the badge looks like the Ground Gunner badge (GG) used by the RAF Regiment in World War 2 - the badge below are the crossed rifles of a qualified marksman
hen190782 Posted 25 May , 2013 Author Share Posted 25 May , 2013 Staffey Thanks, but the Castleton Lantern Slides all relate to WW1 ... they were used in a slideshow in December 1918. Nigel

Nigel The first letter is the curly L used on the LG badge, and is the skill-at-arms badge for a Lewis Gunner, worn over it's rifles equivalent. Graham Stewart Posted 27 May , 2013 Share Posted 27 May , 2013 Ref 44 - would only be Naval related if either Royal Marine's or Royal Naval Division, as you're looking at 2 Good Conduct Badges. Naval GCB's when in Naval uniform were worn on the upper arm
hen190782 Posted 27 May , 2013 Author Share Posted 27 May , 2013 Just had another look at the full image 44 LHS ... do not know where I got Naval from ... there is a cap with the MGC badge as clear as daylight!!! Nigel
