Hi

recently given this item, can you tell me what it is? It is aprox 3 inches long.

Looks like an Army Scout Sleeve Badge??;worn I think on the upper sleeve

Quite agree with HarryB it looks like it is a Skill at Arms badge denoting Army Scout although at 3" in length it does sound as though it is a bit on the large side.

Hi

it has the usual attachment as seen in collar badges i.e. 2 loops with a clip through. May be associated to Hussars???

Company Scout, or Squadron Scout, the junior grade. Scarlet backing suggests worn on tunic pre 1915 by a regiment with scarlet facing colours. Possibly adapted for war use. Senior grade badge even bigger, with cross bar.

Lucky to be given one: I have several of each, they are lovely pieces of brass.

Weren't these also the trade badge for snipers? I know later they wore the 'S' above crossed rifles, but I remember reading something about this being the original badge.

I posted this picture before on a similiar theme, it's from Mike Stedmans book Manchester pals and shows a scout badge, fleur de lys design as yours but NOT the same. I have also seen the badge for sale on ebay ( but missed i)
