Remembered Today:

2/8th Kings Liverpool Cap badge query

Good Morning

My grandfather served with the 2/8th Kings Liverpool Regiment between 1915 and 1917, when he was gassed and returned to the UK.

I have a posed, photograph of him in uniform of which I have cut /copied below a close-up of his cap badge. When I have researched the cap badges of the 2/8th KLR for this period, it is described as an 'Irish Harp, surmounted by and Imperial Crown, resting on a wreath of shamrock'. I have copied a photo of this taken from the IWM website. Whilst the detail on my photograph is 'fuzzy', the cap badges seem to me, to be similar but different? ('Harp', if it is a harp, appears 'central' on official photograph but 'off-set' to right on my photo.)

I apologise if this seems a trivial query but I want to make sure I'm not 'missing something' and I would value the opinion of any cap-badge experts on this which may explain things for me.

Many thanks in anticipation.

David

It looks like Liverpool Irish to me, Dave.

It's difficult to tell, but possibly the left end of the scroll (the bit that says '8th') could have broken off his badge and that's what makes it look off-centre.

Thanks Ken, I can't see why it wouldn't be the 'Liverpool Irish' but it just didn't seem quite the same. It's good to have a 'second opinion'.

Sadly it hasn't survived the passage of time!

Hi Dave,

Definitely Liverpool Irish. Does his uniform have blackened buttons too?

Yes, it does Simon, I've attached the full version of the photo I am referring to and I'd say those buttons are black.

Thanks

Dave
