museumtom Posted 11 September , 2004 Share Posted 11 September , 2004 Hello Dave. I had noticed the hilt and quillon in your other picture of the strange knob. This is the Italian1871/87/1916 bayonet and scabbard. This means that it was accepted for issue in 1871, then it was modified in 1887 and again in 1916. The modifications were, (a) the quillon was originally a curved one and is now pinted, ( the grips were changed from composition grips to wood, and © the blade was shortened. Any bayonet collector would know this bayonet immediately by the scabbard chape and the poiinted qiollon. There is one for sale on ebay here http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...2268857577&rd=1 enjoy Tom.
