MikB Posted 12 May , 2013 Share Posted 12 May , 2013 The photo's not very clear, but can I see a left-hand rifling mark on the penetrating bullet? Was this a friendly-fire incident? Regards, MikB
Michael Haselgrove Posted 12 May , 2013 Share Posted 12 May , 2013 Hello Terry, Yes, an interesting photo that I remember from many years ago. I wonder what happened to the original souvenir? I would like to examine the original article as, judging from the length of the "German" bullet, I question whether it is in fact German. It appears to me to be too long. Regards, Michael H. P.S. Have just seen the above post which confirms my suspicions. One for TonyE perhaps.
TonyE Posted 12 May , 2013 Share Posted 12 May , 2013 I agree with you both, it looks suspiciously like a .303 inch bullet! Regards TonyE
gew98 Posted 17 May , 2013 Share Posted 17 May , 2013 It could very well be a balle D french bullet. But in any case the germans used alot of captured french arms and ammunition as well as taking a good fancy to Lewis guns as we all know. The thread here sometime back on Lewis Guns in german service caliber was most excellent as well.
TonyE Posted 17 May , 2013 Share Posted 17 May , 2013 The rifling on the bullet appears to be left handed which means it was fired from a L-E or a Vickers, not a Lewis. Also, the ogive of the bullet is wrong for a French Balle D. Regards TonyE
