Hi Pals,

Following another thread re Pte William Connor, I went to see the Memorial he is mentioned on. It was a sad experience! I am reporting it for , hopefully, restoration and photographed all of it as evidence. Making a list of the names for researching I have one which is so worn and moss covered that it is beating me. Any ideas welcome. I've tried inverting, embossing and all the usual digital tricks.

So far I have BOY W................. ...............

I know one shouldn't do this (or should one- it is non-invasive) but have you thought of a charcoal rubbing?

Yes but it's overlooked by lots of houses.

Malcolm,

Based on the pics supplied (and some devious guess work by others), I've had a quick look on CWGC to see if there is a "Boy" named "Crawford".

I would like to shout "Eureka!!" but the only hit is.......

CRAWFORD, ARTHUR HENRY CHARLES

Initials: A H C

Nationality: United Kingdom

Rank: Signal Boy

Regiment: Royal Naval Reserve

Unit Text: H.M. Trawler "Corientes."

Age: 16

Date of Death: 23/06/1917

Service No: 291SB

Additional information: Son of Arthur William and Rebecca Jane Crawford, of 1E, Peabody Avenue, Ebury Bridge, Pimlico, London.

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: 27.

Cemetery: CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL

The "W" that you've pointed out, might be an "A"?

Given that this youngster came from London, I'm guessing that your memorial is north of the border?!?!

Les.

Sometimes the stone becomes more legible if you spray a little plain water on it. You could also try shining a strong beam of light obliquely across the letters. Or try reading it braille-style with the fingertips.

Well, It does appear Crawford and I can't find any on CWGC that fit. Looks like a trip to the parish church to see if he is on the plaque or he may have been an ' odds and sods ' like I was in the Army which means the other churches. Another trip next week to have a closer look. He may have died after 1921 of course.

Thanks for all your inputs.

Here for the record is the list for a wee place like Slateford which was a village in 14-18.

Looking at the additional info you've supplied (i.e. supplementry roll), the first name you've listed, Lance Sgt R Mair, is listed as a WW2 casualty..... therefore by the pure power of deduction :P I think Andrew's posting is more than likely your man (or boy!)

Well done PALS! So the supplementary roll is for WW2. Strangely, there are two more Boys from HMS Hood on my local Memorial which is just up the road from Slateford. They must have been pals together.

Thank you one and all.
