Simon_Fielding Posted 13 April , 2003 Share Posted 13 April , 2003 Local telly 'Look West' has just featured a pub - I think called the Pembroke Arms - near Salisbury Plain that has a rather impressive looking museum....I didn't catch where it was!! Loads of displays about the training camps nearby in WW1 - but it didn't say where!! Arrgh!! Just the place for a cheeky pint or two during the Easter holidays! Anyone help?? HERITAGE PLUS Posted 13 April , 2003 Share Posted 13 April , 2003 Simon The pub is in the village of Fovant. The artifacts in the pub are linked to the units who were camped in the district and to The Fovant Badges Society which looks after the upkeep of the Regimental Badges carved in the chalk on the hillsides in the area. Useful publications are available at the pub which gets its name from the fact that the Earl of Pembroke's seat is at Wilton House a few miles away. The badges that can be seen in the area are: Map of Australia The Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry; The Young Men's Christian Association The 6th City of London Regiment The Australian Commonwealth Military Forces Badge The Royal Signals Corps The Wiltshire Regiment The London Rifle Brigade The Post Office Rifles The Devonshire Regiment The 7th City of London Regiment The Royal Warwickshire Regiment See www.fovantbadges.com
Andrew P Posted 14 April , 2003 Share Posted 14 April , 2003 I visited this pub in 2000 with some English friends I was staying with and was surprised to find what it contained(apart from the good beer ) It's definately worth a look. Cheers Andrew
Mark Posted 17 April , 2003 Share Posted 17 April , 2003 The pub is well worth a visit. All the artefacts are displayed around the main bar. Must be the only museum you can walk round with a pint in your hand The Annual Drumhead Parade will be held at East Farm, Fovant on 13 July at 3pm. The farm is at the foot of the hills with the badges in the chalk. I went last year and found it very moving. Check out The Fovant Badges Society website.
