Tim P Posted 28 March , 2013 Share Posted 28 March , 2013 clearly in the months prior to the armistice, the fledgling RAF will have had all of the old affectations of the two arms that joined to create it, alongside its new items. I have been asked to put together a portrayal of that era for a formal function for the Royal Air Force and want to get it right. At my disposal I have a 1902 service dress so the safe option would be sgt observer late RFC. the only insignia being brevet and rank, to include props. soft trench cap with RFC badge which would be my only outlay. this is evidenced in the big blue book. my desire to create a 1918 sd with eagles in place and a shiny peak cap is a pipe dream in the time frame and budget I have , despite having some killer custom repro eagles in red on wool. That said, I would rather lean towards early RAF than late RFC, simply because of the occasion. so is there any advice anyone can offer, beyond playing it safe with plan a) ? auchonvillerssomme Posted 29 March , 2013 Share Posted 29 March , 2013 Tim, if you don't have it, a copy of Observers and Navigators and other non-pilot aircrew in the RFC, RNAS and RAF by C.G Jefford is really useful. Mick
auchonvillerssomme Posted 29 March , 2013 Share Posted 29 March , 2013 As an aside there are many interesting articles on uniform in the FLIGHT archive such as this one http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/view/1918/1918%20-%200761.html
