Hi All

I recently became the owner of a WW1 pair of medals British War Medal and Victory Medal named to E.M Lipscomb no number or rank.

What ive discovered by looking at her MIC is that Edith Mabel Lipscomb served with the French Red Cross FRX number 101 B Date of entry 5-17.

Ive also found out that E Mabel Lipscomb was an artist.

Any other info would be grateful

Regards

Jon

This may be where you found out she was an artist http://cornwallartis...mabel-lipscombe - the Newlyn Art Gallery seems to have been her main location so I'd suggest you either contact them http://www.newlynartgallery.co.uk/ or the Cornwall Record Office http://www.cornwall....aspx?page=24656

NB that she sometimes seems to have spelt her name Lipscombe and appears with both spellings in the Times Digital Archive (very brief mentions of paintings).

Possible archive contacts: http://www.royalwatercoloursociety.co.uk/archive.aspx

http://www.royalinstituteofpaintersinwatercolours.org.uk/contact.html

I wonder if she was any relation to the Guy Lipscombe whose paintings are in the IWM:

Page 48 is part of the roll submitted by the Depots d'Eclopes, which were holding camps for me who were recuperating, but not bad enough to be be discharged or sent home for a spell. It would suggest that she acted as a Canteen assistant or some such, as the men in these camps were not usually bad enough to need nursing care.

Unfortunately, i can't tell you which particular deport she served at.

Yes, she was a 'Canteener d'Eclopes' - the medal roll doesn't mention any particular unit, but she served between May 1917 and November 1918.

A bit of background information on her...

Edith Mabel Lipscomb was born in St Albans in June 1866, daughter of Alderman, Magistrate, Physician and Surgeon, John T N Lipscomb (twice Mayor of St Albans).

She never married and died in Canterbury on 20th April 1954. She left £15,190.10s.10d (£291k today) to Dr John Milman Lipscomb. He was the son of Edith's brother, Eustace (also a medical practitioner).

She was living in lodgings in Penzance in the 1911 census.

She was a Gouache listed artist between 1909 and 1929. In 1929 she returned from France with another artist, Bessie Holmes. Edith gave her address as Ninton, Ventnor, Isle of Wight.

  • 7 years later...

Hello, I am researching Miss Lipscombe and her paintings and have come across one reference to a Major Budworth R.H.A. painted in approx 1912, the reference states he was in 'Regimentals', would anyone know how I can find out who he was?

Miss Edith  Mabel Lipscombe was an artist of the Newlyn Art Colony, and studied under Norman Garstin and produced many varied paintings, of which 9 were exhibited at the Royal Academy. Her brother was the headmaster at Bolton School, William Gull Lipscombe. I have two paintings of my own and there are four still at Bolton School. If you require any more information, please contact me.

I would be very appreciative to obtain photo's of her war medals.....
