Dear Forum,

I'm looking to find out what the 16th Devonshire's were up to on and around the 3rd August 1918 when a cousin of mine, William Henry George Baulch (33326) was killed. He is burried in Aire Communal Cemetary Any clues from the war daries would be greatly appreciated as always,

Many Thanks

Dav

Trench holding just to the east of Calonne sur la Lys. The Germans, in expectation of a large scale attack, were quite active with artillery and MG fire in this sector at the time. Your relative is likely to have been a victim of this 'pre-emptive' fire.

"1.8.18 Battalion in the front line of the Amusoires - Haverskerque sector. Conditions normal". Next two days ditto. That's all it says, I am afraid.

thanks again, I'll never know for sure but this is a great help. A sad, mundane if you will, waste of life near the end of the war.
