Hoplophile Posted 22 March , 2013 Share Posted 22 March , 2013 A wide range of sources, from the Official History to Hansard to the memoirs of those concerned, tell us that mobilization of the Regular Army began on 5 August 1914. That same day saw the official 'embodiment' of the Territorial Force. None of these sources, however, tell us when the mobilization process ended. That is, was there a date when someone marked the calendar 'mobilization complete'?
archangel9 Posted 22 March , 2013 Share Posted 22 March , 2013 I'm not sure if there was an official date but the History of the Second Division records that by midnight on 8th-9th August all units had completed mobilization, there were "a few minor exceptions" however. The 5th Brigade war diary records - "8th August. Mobilization was completed by 7 pm with the exception of 4 officers & 11 men. The deficiency in men is accounted for by a sudden order received by the Connaught Rangers to bring No. 2 platoon Divl. Cyclists Co. up to war strength." The Regimental History of the Connaught Rangers records that mobilization was reported complete on 13th August, the ninth day since the order was received. bill24chev Posted 22 March , 2013 Share Posted 22 March , 2013 A snap shot of the progress to full mobilization in the German army, Bloem tells us his regiment was fully mobilized by 7th August which is the seventh day of mobilization. I am not sure if you can say mobilization ended on a given date I think the correct terminology would be mobilization was completed on or by a given date. My reasoning being that the Army was de-mobilized in a staggered process from 11th November 1918 and the TF was disembodied on a given date after the armistice.
