Derek Robertson Posted 6 September , 2004 Share Posted 6 September , 2004 On a Victory & BWM is inscribed : Pte A. MARCHBANK 30098 Norfolk Regiment. However on the MIC's online there is no A. MARCHBANK listed. Listed instead is: Pte A.MARCHANT 30098 Norfolk Regiment and 56827 Northumberland Fusiliers. Do the above relate to the same man? Has there been a transcription error somewhere? Will the actual Medal Roll show him as MARCHBANK or MARCHANT? And what surname will his service record (if it survives) be listed under? Any help would be gladly accepted
Jock Bruce Posted 6 September , 2004 Share Posted 6 September , 2004 Have you downloaded the image of the MIC to see what it actually says, or just looked at the index? If the latter, be aware there are transcription errors in the index to the MICs - you really need to look at the image. Jock
Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 6 September , 2004 Share Posted 6 September , 2004 What is written on the MIC is what is written on the medal roll. Amendments are recorded on the card and on the roll and if the medals were returned for amendments, the dates of submission and despatch are recorded on the MIC. The name under which the soldier attested is shown on the record, and I have seen cases where the names on the medal do not correspond to the name on the service record - the soldier did not return them to be amended. The MIC index on-line is not complete and the transcription errors are scandalous considering it is being offered as a paid for service.
Guest Russell.Gore@crawley.gov.uk Posted 6 September , 2004 Share Posted 6 September , 2004 could it be that he served under a different name ?
Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 6 September , 2004 Share Posted 6 September , 2004 could it be that he served under a different name ? What name appears on the medal, appears on the MIC and the medal roll unless an official amendment is made, which is always recorded on the MIC. Kath Posted 28 September , 2004 Share Posted 28 September , 2004 Trying to find other Cornishmen in the ASC 18th La. Coy. who survived the War, I put in regt.nos. close to those who died. I found MIC of Rumalls, Thomas, R A S C SS/13895 Private. I can't find him in 1901 census or FreeBMD in any distrct. There are various Thomas RUNNALS in the census & BMD - all from Cornwall. I told the DocumentsOnline Support Team who replied: Dear Customer Thank you for your email and for your query. Our Quality Assurance Team have checked the card and have decided not to change the reference as they believe it does clearly state Rummel (sic)and we can only transcribe what has been originally written by the War Office Clerk. It is possible though that the clerk may have made a mistake in the first instance though but our policy does not allow us to alter the reference because of that. Apologies. plus ce change..... SPotter Posted 7 October , 2004 Share Posted 7 October , 2004 Pals, All the more reason for visiting in person and viewing the actual card (OK, microfiche). At least then we can make our own interpretation of what the name actually is or should be. Regards Steve
